Big Wave training with a jetski

We've all seen recent news about filming paddlers on big waves from a jetski to get better angles. Without a big wave to surf around the Potomac at current water levels we decided to see if we could use the jetski to launch ourselves into big wave moves.

As you can see from the pics above and below it works better then expected. Through trial and error we were able to figure out how to throw a variety of airscrews, pan ams, blunts, and backstabs. We figured out that the timing of the bounce and throwing yourself into a move is almost exactly the same as on a big wave, so it's an awesome way to work on big wave moves. Who knows? we might even invent some new moves this way.

How it works is we built a sled that you can pull yourself onto that is attached directly behind the jetski, as opposed to being pulled with a rope like waterskiing/wakeboarding. When the jetski gets up to speed (40-45mph) you push off the sled. Your momentum keeps the kayak moving so now all you have to do is time your bounce and throw your move! It's just like flying down the face of a big wave.

Please note that we are doing this on a flat section of the Potomac called Algonkian park. It is completly legal to run motorized watercraft there (jetskis, bass boats, etc.)

I surfed a wake without a rope a few times; good for long surfs but no air.

This looks like a cool alternative
